On March 24, the amphitheater of Universidade Jean Piaget de Cabo Verde hosted the screening of the film The Boy from the Sea, an initiative promoted by the Cape Verdean Cinema and Audiovisual Association (ACACV).
The event aimed to highlight national cinema and strengthen Cape Verdean cultural identity through art. According to ACACV president Cândida Barros, the association works to promote Cape Verdean cinema while also considering international productions, with a special focus on stories that reflect the country’s reality, culture, and identity.
The film, which tells the story of the ship Vicente’s shipwreck on January 8, 2015, off the coast of Fogo Island, has already been shown on several islands, including Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santiago, and Fogo, receiving a positive audience response.
During the session, the importance of cinema in the academic context was also emphasized. According to Professor Szimaniak, the screening strengthens institutional cooperation and is part of the university’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, highlighting the role of cinema as a learning tool, including in language teaching and other areas of knowledge.
