The Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde participated in the organization of the 4th edition of Malaria Nos PALOP, an international scientific event held as part of the celebrations of World Malaria Day.
This year, under the theme “Climate Change: New Challenges in Malaria Control”, Malaria Nos PALOP took place at UniPiaget on April 24, bringing together a selected group of specialists who shared knowledge and experiences with both an in-person and predominantly online audience, surpassing one hundred registered participants.
The opening ceremony was attended by several distinguished personalities, including the Representative of the WHO Office for Cape Verde, Dr. Ann Lindstrand, the President of the National Institute of Public Health, Dr. Maria da Luz, and the Health Delegate of the City of Praia, Dr. Ulardina Furtado, who honored the event with their participation.
The conferences addressed highly relevant topics, such as the epidemiological challenges for malaria control in Mozambique in the context of extreme climate events, vector insecticide resistance and population mobility; research on environmental mitigation measures, such as plastic reduction and decarbonization in malaria programmes; the impact of climate change on the bioecology of disease-transmitting mosquitoes; and the current malaria situation in Angola.
The event also included two workshops dedicated to the use of Machine Learning tools and the R software applied to malaria research. More information about this and previous editions can be found on the project’s official website.
In its 4th edition, Malaria Nos PALOP consolidates itself as a key platform for specialists from the Portuguese-speaking African countries to jointly address challenges related to malaria and other vector-borne diseases in their respective countries.
