On February 25, the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde held a lecture in its media library entitled “Claridade 90 Years – Women in Cape Verdean Literature,” as part of the institution’s 25th anniversary celebrations. The event featured the participation of writer Dina Salústio and brought together students, lecturers and invited guests.
During her speech, Dina Salústio expressed her satisfaction at celebrating the 90th anniversary of the magazine Claridade, a literary movement marked by figures such as Baltasar Lopes, Jorge Barbosa and Manuel Lopes. The writer emphasized that the university is a space for knowledge, reflection and the building of citizenship, encouraging young people to go beyond their limits and invest in their academic education.
While addressing the presence of women in national literature, she highlighted that over time women have begun to write in their own voice, taking ownership of the narrative of their experiences, expectations and challenges. She also noted that Claridade maintains a strong connection with the female figure, both through the central role of women in literary works and through the need to expand their participation in the literary sphere.
In turn, Professor Neusa Melo stressed that the initiative reinforces the university’s commitment to promoting culture and critical thinking. She recalled that since 1936, Cape Verdean intellectuals have sought to affirm the country’s cultural identity, opening paths for greater participation of women in society and in literary production.
The lecture thus served as a moment to celebrate the literary history of Cape Verde and to reflect on the transformative role of women over nine decades.
