
The workshop on raising awareness about the prevention of tobacco consumption was held on January 8 at the amphitheater of the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde and was aimed at students of the institution.
The initiative was promoted by the Alcohol and Other Drugs Coordination Commission (CCAD), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), with the objective of strengthening tobacco consumption prevention within the academic community.
At the opening of the event, the Executive Secretary of the CCAD, Raquel Lopes, highlighted the importance of investing in prevention among young people, emphasizing the role of responsible communication, based on scientific evidence, in promoting healthy lifestyles.
Subsequently, Dr. Eloisa Borges presented the results of the II National Survey on Tobacco Use among Young People (2023), highlighting the relevance of the data for defining effective prevention strategies targeted at youth.
In the second panel, Dr. Celestino Lobo addressed the strategies used by the tobacco industry to attract children, adolescents, and young people, warning about the risks associated with the early normalization of tobacco consumption.
The initiative reinforced the importance of information and awareness-raising in promoting healthy lifestyles within the academic environment.
